Arizona Senator John McCain's Straight Talk Express hit a rough patch Friday, as McCain's 95-year-old mother Roberta had harsh words about presidential candidate Mitt Romney. KJZZ's Tony Ganzer reports.
TG: MSNBC's Chris Matthews asked Roberta McCain if she thought Mitt Romney had done much heavy lifting for America with his government service and heading of the Utah Olympic committee.
Roberta McCain: "And as far as this Salt Lake City thing, he's a Mormon, and the Mormons in Salt Lake City had caused that scandal. And to clean that up I, uh, it's not even...again, it's not a subject.“
John McCain: "The views of my mother are not necessarily the views of mine.“
Senator John McCain and his mother, Robert, spoke with Chris Matthews late last week.
TG: Romney was tapped to return credibility to Salt Lake City after a bid scandal in 1999. The Salt Lake Tribune says he's credited with saving the Olympics. A position he used to launch a political career.
TG: Senator McCain emphasized Romney as a "great family man“ and that Romney should be judged on his record not religion.
John McCain: "Mormons are a great people. I think it should in no way be a factor in consideration or lack of consideration for Governor Romney.
TG: A spokesman for Romney's campaign says no one should attack a person's faith and candidates should rather make a case to voters based on issues.
